The Census of Population and Housing 2011 was held on Sunday, 20 November 2011. The Census determined demographic and social characteristics pertaining to persons, families and households in Malta, and included information on housing and amenities at a national, regional and local level.
The Census had its legal basis in the Census Act of 1948 and in Regulation 763/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The latter regulation establishes common rules for the provision of comprehensive data on population and housing every ten years by the EU Member States.
In exercise of the powers vested in him by the Census Act of 1948, the Prime Minister appointed Mr Michael Pace Ross, Director General of the National Statistics Office, as Census Officer.
Preliminary Census results were published in July 2012. Final results were presented during a public seminar organised by NSO in October 2013, and published in January 2014.
