Introduction

The Census of Population and Housing 2011 will be held in November, with Census Day being Sunday, 20 November. The Census will determine demographic and social characteristics pertaining to persons, families and households in Malta, and will include information on housing and amenities at a national, regional and local level.

The Census has its legal basis in the Census Act of 1948 and in Regulation 763/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The latter regulation establishes common rules for the provision of comprehensive data on population and housing every ten years by the EU Member States.

In exercise of the powers vested in him by the Census Act of 1948, the Prime Minister has appointed Mr Michael Pace Ross, Director General of the National Statistics Office, as Census Officer.
